halloween party
Today was Clare Bear’s Halloween party. The not so haunted Dahl House became a place of tricks and treats. I am not a party planner by any definition, but I love putting together this little Halloween party. It’s become a tradition for my kindergarteners (and Clara lucked out last year also!).
Waiting for the guests to arrive . . . .
The cute crew . . . .
Let’s get this party started!!!
These cuties put together crafts, played Pin the Hat on the Witch, and danced and munched to their hearts’ content. (I didn’t get a picture of the wild & witchy dancing and the spooktacular story time.) Luckily I had a good friend with me to make the party just as fun for the moms! I love this tradition and I already can’t wait for next year’s party!
p.s. This was my easiest party yet. The napping princess was asleep upstairs. I’ve NEVER thrown a party without one or two little hanger-ons. I practically didn’t know what to do with myself. 🙂
princess and the pea
A cherished October tradition of ours is taking our girls to a fall play at our favorite garden store. (It is an amazing 10-acre Garden of Eden overflowing with gorgeousness.) This was our fifth or sixth year taking the girls. We loved meeting up with our dear friends, the Talbots. After six years apart, we’re so happy to have them living in the area again!
This next picture is a little disturbing, but the actor is HILARIOUS. The plays wouldn’t be the same without him.

witches’ weekend
I have the best friends a girl could ask for. (Even if some of them are secretly witches, ha!) I’m incredibly lucky to have so many wonderful women in my life. This particular group of ladies I’ve known for 10+ years. We all met as young married couples spreading our wings after college, most of us far from family. Ten years later, we are still going strong–monthly nights out, movie dates, slumber parties (I know, right?!), and anything else crazy and fun we can think up. Especially if it involves food.
Which brings me to Witches’ Council. Four years ago, Lisa dared us all to dress up as witches and meet at our favorite restaurant. I have to admit I wasn’t overly excited about the whole dress-up part. But we all did it, and LOVED it, and a new tradition was born!
The 4th annual Witches’ Council . . . .
It wouldn’t be the same without a baby witch wizard there
Gorgeous witches . . . .
My favorite witches + favorite restaurant = heavenly! To make it even better, most of went to see Broadway’s Wicked the next day . . .
. . . followed up by a loooonoong dinner in which we talked the night away. I came home feeling as if I had been on vacation! Best. Weekend. Ever.
rainy day
My girls never let a rainy day get them down . . . .
pumpkin bread: reality check
best pumpkin bread ever
This time of year for me is ALL about the food. So many recipes, so little time . . . . I have my favorites and of course new ones that I’m dying to try out.
Of all the delicious goodness out there, here is a recipe I’ve made for years. It never, ever disappoints. I posted this on my old blog http://www.threebythesea.blogspot.com/2008/10/taste-of-autumn.html but since it is hands-down my favorite AUTUMN recipe, it definitely bears revisiting!
This is the most mouth-watering, aromatic, pumpkin-y bread you could dream up. It makes 3 loaves–as my sister-in-law Laura says, one to eat, one to freeze, and one to give away. Lately I tend to bake these into muffins so my girls can grab them for school lunch or quick after-school snacks.
Pumpkin Bread
1 (15 oz) can pumpkin puree
4 eggs
1 cup vegetable oil
2/3 cup water
2 1/2 cups sugar
3 1/2 cups whole wheat flour
2 tsp baking soda
1 1/2 tsp salt
1 tsp ground cinnamon
1/2 tsp ground cloves
1/4 tsp ground ginger
*Throw in chocolate chips to make these even better! (Is that possible . . .)
**I make these with whole wheat flour. So soft & moist.
Directions
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease and flour three 7×3 inch loaf pans.
In a large bowl, mix together pumpkin puree, eggs, oil, water, and sugar until well blended. In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, and ginger. Stir the dry ingredients into the pumpkin mixture until just blended. Stir in chocolate chips. Pour into the prepared pans.
Bake for about 50 minutes in the preheated oven.
Loaves are done when toothpick inserted in center comes out clean.
(For best results: Two little cutie pies to help stir & taste test!)
first day of school
School started right after Labor Day. I wasn’t ready to give my girls back this year. However. Yummy food softens the blow . . . .
My 3rd, K, and 2nd graders

Another year with our favorite kindergarten teacher
Now . . . what do I do with this one? 😉 #babyprincessandsheknowsit
hello world!
I’m back! Back in the blogging world, that is. I left off consistently blogging three years ago. Other things crept in and kept me busy. Running a half marathon. Having another baby. Sleeping. Baking. Reading. Traveling. LIFE.
But lately? Lately I’ve felt the pull of the journaling world. I miss expressing myself. I miss having a home for my photographs of this lovely, gorgeous, amazing life. I want my girls to sit down with me someday and laugh and cry at our family blog. Each day that passes by, I forget. But my blog will be the one place where I won’t forget. My memories will live.
My dear old blog is here: www.threebythesea.blogspot.com. Now that my life is graced by FOUR little girls, I needed a new space for our family journal. I can’t wait to fill these new “pages” with memories.
